Question: What is the actual size a starting novel should be? Won't forty thousand words be enough? I have written 170 pages of it. but some say that is too big and some say that is not a size for novel? Help me.

Answer: Forty thousand words is the bare minimum for a novel. Eighty thousand words would be more normal.

The challenge is that a book that is at the minimum word length may be harder to sell to a publisher, unless it is a children's chapter book or perhaps a science fiction story you can sell to a magazine to be serialized.

Nonetheless, some short novels do get published been published, so it really depends how good the story is.
