Making emotional Characters
Question: Hi! I have written countless short stories, but for some reason, I can never get the emotional feeling with my characters. They seem so shallow and the same.Answer
There's no magic trick here. You have to put yourself in your characters' shoes and let your own emotional response to that imaginary situation guide you.
Your characters will be different and have emotional depth to the extent you can envision their specific situation and perceive it through their eyes. Also, to the extent you can connect the specifics of their external behaviour with the emotions that underlie it.
Imagination and empathy are things you can develop through practice and experience, and by coping with tough situations, but I can't tell you how to fake them.
Perhaps you could start with writing about feelings you really can relate to or people similar to those you know on a deep level, perhaps because they are in your own life.
