Is crime part of mystery genre?

Question: Is crime another type of genre or is it part of the mystery genre?

Answer: It's more the other way around. Murder mysteries are one type of crime fiction. Other related subgenres are:

- hard boiled detective stories
- police procedurals
- court room dramas
- capers (stories where thieves are the heroes)
- espionage stories
- thrillers (legal or other)
- suspense stories

Basically, any story that involves the investigation or unraveling of the details of a crime counts as crime fiction.

Murder mysteries, on the other hand, begin specifically with an instance of murder. The plot concerns the effort of a detective (whether amateur or professional) to discover the murderer's identity and how the murder occurred.
