Question: What methods other than similes and metaphors do you use to describe a character?

Answer: The best way to reveal a personality is to show the person in action. What they do, how they do it, what they say, and how say it are all very revealing.

At the same time, you want to give your character tags that will paint a picture of the character in the reader's mind that will make the character distinct.

Tags include things like the character's most noticeable physical features, style of dress, favourite expressions, mannerisms, etc.

Another technique is to fill the reader in on a character's unique backstory. This is a little easier to do if you are using an omniscient narrator, but easy enought to do when using other styles of narration as well.

For your main or point-of-view characters, you will also let the reader in on their thoughts, feelings, and inner conflicts, which will add another dimension to the character.
