Anttagonists in a Quest Plot

by Betty K

Question: In a quest plot, if one antagonist is vanquished (whether it is a person or a thing or a condition), can something else take it's place?

Answer: Yes. We sometimes call that a hand-off, especially if the antagonist who takes over is connected or related to the first one (son of, pupil of, boss of, etc.), and therefore has a similar reason to prevent the protagonist's mission from succeeding.
